The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority, celebrates World Wildlife Day, which falls on March 3rd each year.
This year’s theme focuses on “Financing Wildlife Conservation: Investing in People and the Planet,” aiming to build a resilient future for both humanity and the Earth.
The celebration of this occasion serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the numerous benefits of wildlife and to reduce encroachments upon it, given the widespread economic, environmental, and social impacts. This year, the event highlights the necessity of funding wildlife conservation measures, emphasizing the importance of investing in the safety of ecosystems, maintaining clean air and water quality, supporting livelihoods, and establishing regulatory frameworks regarding climate. This requires mobilizing resources from both the public and private sectors to conserve wildlife and their habitats, fulfilling financial commitments, and supporting countries, particularly those facing biodiversity loss.
The event aims to propose innovative solutions such as green and blue bonds and to implement the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index established by the United Nations, to direct accessible financing and ensure that indigenous peoples and local communities—who represent the first line of defense—receive funding in fair and equitable ways.
It is worth noting that the celebration of World Wildlife Day was adopted during the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2013, and March 3rd also marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
