His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik gave his Royal directives pertaining to names of national and main roads in the Sultanate of Oman.
As per His Majesty’s directives, naming the road linking the governorates of Muscat, A’Dakhiliyah, A’Dhahirah and Al Buraimi (approximately 388 km) extending from Burj Al Sahwa roundabout in Muscat Governorate to Hafeet border crossing in Al Buraimi Governorate, as Sultan Thuwaini bin Said Road, while naming A’Sharqiyah Expressway(about 250 km) extending from the intersection of the Wilayat of Bidbid in A’Dakhiliyah Governorate to the traffic lights of the Souk (Market) of the Wilayat of Sur in the South A’Sharqiyah Governorate as Sultan Turki bin Said Road.
The Royal directives also provide for naming Khasab-Lima-Diba road (under construction) in the Governorate of Musandam (approximately 72 km) as Sultan Faisal bin Turki Road, naming Al Batinah Coastal road (under construction) extending from Halban intersection in South Al Batinah Governorate to Khatmat Milaha intersection in North Al Batinah Governorate (approximately 244 km) as Sultan Taimour bin Faisal Road, naming Nizwa-Salalah road (approximately 857 km) extending from Nizwa intersection in A’Dakhiliyah Governorate to Al Saada Roundabout in Salalah in Dhofar Governorate as Sultan Said bin Taimour Road and naming Muscat-Al Batinah Road (approximately 300 km) extending from Al Qurum intersection in Muscat Governorate to the Khatmat Milaha border crossing in North Al Batinah Governorate as Sultan Qaboos Road.
Eng. Said Hamoud Al Ma’awali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology said that the Royal directives on names of national and main roads in the Sultanate of Oman reflect His Majesty’s keenness to connect generations to Oman’s ancient history, to revive this history in people’s minds.
He told Oman News Agency (ONA) that His Majesty’s directives regarding these names for the main and strategic roads have national, cultural, and civilizational dimensions, as the roads will become linked to the aspects of the Omani history and civilization, and in memory of the great leaders of Oman throughout history.
The minister added that since the beginning of his auspicious reign, His Majesty has paid great attention to modernizing and developing the road network due to its vital role in civil and urban development, enabling economic diversification, and achieving the goals of Oman Vision 2040.
His Majesty’s directives have continued to move forward in completing strategic and basic road projects that link the various governorates with the highest specifications of technical quality and traffic safety.
He pointed out that since His Majesty’s accession day, the value of road construction, rehabilitation and maintenance projects has reached more than RO 1.5 billion, and some of these road projects are still under implementation. Upon their completion, there will be a qualitative shift in the quality and integration of the roads network in the Sultanate of Oman, affirmed the minister.
