APSR Issues Two New Electricity Tariff Regulations

Muscat,

The Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR) has issued two decisions on Cost-Reflective Tariff Regulation and the Approved Tariff Regulation for electricity connection and supply. The Authority affirmed that the tariff applied under these regulations reflects the current tariff.

The two regulations are published in compliance with the legal requirements to ensure that subscribers and operators are informed of the details related to the application of this tariff.

The cost-reflective tariff regulation targets non-residential subscribers whose annual electricity consumption exceeds 100 megawatt hour. The APSR determines this tariff on an annual basis in coordination with the authorities concerned.

The regulation also authorizes the APSR to issue any rules or determinants that include provisions to streamline the application of the cost-reflective tariff for subscribers.

With reference to approved tariff regulation for connection and supply of electricity, the regulation indicates that “the tariff applicable to subscribers in residential units” is determined according to a subscriber’s consumption within each basic or additional account.

The tariff for a basic account starts at 14 baisas per kilowatt/hour for the segment of consumption from zero to (4000) kilowatt/hour. The tariff reaches 18 baisas for consumption between (4001) and (6000) kilowatt/hour. Then, it rises to 32 baisas for consumption above (6000) kilowatt/hour.

In the additional account, the tariff starts at 22 baisas per kilowatt/hour for a segment of consumption up to (4000) kilowatt/hour. The tariff increases to 26 baisas for consumption between (4001) and (6000) kilowatt/hour. Then, it rises to 32 baisas for any consumption beyond that.

In the additional account, a tariff of 22 baisas per kilowatt/hour will be applied for consumption from zero to (4000) kilowatt/hour, rising to 26 baisas for consumption between (4001) and (6000) kilowatt/hour, and reaching 32 baisas for consumption exceeding (6000) kilowatt/hour.

As for non-residential categories, the tariff has been set at 25 baisas per kilowatt/hour for all subscribers in this category.

In the category of agricultural and fishing activities, the tariff allocated starts at 12 baisas per kilowatt/hour for consumption from zero to (3000) kilowatt/hour. It rises to 16 baisas for consumption between (3001) and (6000) kilowatt/hour, and then reaches 24 baisas for consumption exceeding (6000) kilowatt/hour.

The issuance of these regulations reflects the keenness of the APSR to enhance transparency and regulate the relationship between service providers and subscribers, while at the same time ensuring tariff stability in a manner that achieves a balance between the interests of subscribers and the sustainability of the electricity sector.
