Today, the first green hydrogen station for vehicles in the Sultanate of Oman, operated by Shell Oman, was inaugurated to promote sustainable mobility in the country.
The opening ceremony was attended by His Excellency Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals.
The station is located near Muscat International Airport and offers services such as fast charging for electric vehicles and traditional fuel refueling options all in one place. It utilizes electrolyzer technology powered by solar energy to produce up to 130 kg of green hydrogen daily.
His Excellency Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi emphasized the importance of this initiative, which represents the first station for supplying vehicles with green hydrogen in the Sultanate of Oman. He noted that it is a significant step towards sustainability and diversifying energy sources, reflecting the government’s commitment to implementing the vision of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, may God protect him, to make the Sultanate of Oman a leading hub in the field of green hydrogen and a crucial step towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
He explained that the project integrates renewable solar energy, local hydrogen production, and advanced mobility technologies, highlighting the vast potential of hydrogen systems to attract investments and support future technologies.
For his part, Walid Hadi, President of Shell in Oman, stated that the project is a result of collaboration with Mwasalat and Nama for Energy and Water Purchase, underscoring the importance of partnerships in accelerating the transition to sustainable energy solutions.
Engineer Badr bin Mohammed Al Nadabi, CEO of Mwasalat, mentioned that the company will add 15 hydrogen-powered vehicles to its fleet, noting that the project represents a qualitative leap in the transportation sector by using environmentally friendly vehicles, as they provide specialized and distinguished transport services in partnership with institutions from both the public and private sectors.
Meanwhile, Ahmed bin Salem Al Abri, CEO of Nama for Energy and Water Purchase, clarified that the company will provide 7,000 international renewable energy certificates to Oman Shell over the next five years until 2029, at a rate of 1,400 certificates annually. Additionally, 250,000 international renewable energy certificates have been sold to the local market so far, and more than 3 million international renewable energy certificates will be issued in 2025.
Dr. Mohammed bin Mahmoud Al Balushi, CEO of Shell Marketing, affirmed the role of renewable energy in accelerating the transition to sustainable mobility, noting that the launch of the first green hydrogen station in the Sultanate of Oman is a significant achievement that reflects the company’s commitment to the energy sector’s transformation. It demonstrates the potential of green hydrogen to enhance the mobility sector and establish a technical foundation for a flexible, low-carbon transport system.
