Al-Masara Hospital, in collaboration with the Higher Institute of Health Specialties, organized today a conference on emergency psychiatric medicine, under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Said bin Harib Al-Lamki, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health for Health Affairs.
The conference aims to broaden the understanding of emergency psychiatric medicine by reviewing the latest research and scientific studies, analyzing cases of psychiatric emergencies, and discussing recent improvements in the quality of services provided through the application of lean management approaches in the initial assessment of psychiatric patients. Additionally, it seeks to enhance the awareness of healthcare workers regarding best practices in dealing with emergency psychiatric cases, focusing on suicide among adolescents, and promoting collaboration among various health entities by exchanging experiences in handling psychiatric emergencies resulting from drug overdoses.
Several topics were discussed, including: an introduction to emergency psychiatric medicine and its importance in healthcare, analyzing the causes of suicidal behavior among patients receiving care in emergency departments, the significance of evidence-based practice in psychiatry and its role in improving care quality, a study on workplace violence and its impact on nurses in hospitals in the Sultanate of Oman, as well as lean management in psychiatric emergencies and its role in improving the initial assessment of patients. The conference also analyzed the impact of certain medications on individual behaviors, presented a case study on adolescent suicide with a focus on prevention strategies and early intervention, and discussed the role of psychological rehabilitation in improving the lives of patients with schizophrenia.
In this regard, Dr. Badr bin Ali Al-Habsi, Director of Al-Masara Hospital, emphasized that mental health is no longer a secondary issue but a fundamental pillar of an integrated healthcare system, especially when it comes to emergencies that require immediate and precise responses. In psychological crises, which can be pivotal moments in individuals’ lives, effective responses not only save lives but also enhance quality of life and reduce long-term complications.
It is noteworthy that this conference is the first of its kind in the field of emergency psychiatric medicine in the Sultanate of Oman.
