Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (PWP), Oman’s exclusive procurer of power and water capacity, has unveiled the list of qualified companies to develop five large-scale wind energy projects, with a combined value of approximately RO500 million.
The projects mark a key milestone in Oman’s push towards renewable energy, aligning with the country’s strategic objective of generating 30% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030. These wind projects, located across several governorates, will play a pivotal role in reducing the sultanate’s carbon footprint and enhancing its energy security.
Three of the proposed wind independent power projects (IPPs) will connect to the Main Interconnection System (MIS), while two will be integrated into the Dhofar Power System (DPS). The projects will collectively contribute hundreds of megawatts of clean energy to Oman’s power grid.
Overview of Wind IPPs
- Jalan Bani Bu Ali Wind IPP: Located in South Sharqiyah Governorate, this project is slated for commercial operation in Q1 2027, with a capacity between 91-105 MW.
- Duqm Wind IPP: Positioned at Ras Madrakah in Duqm, this project is targeting a Q4 2027 operation date and is expected to generate between 234-270 MW.
- Mahoot Wind I IPP: Situated in Al Wusta Governorate, this large-scale wind project aims to begin operations by Q4 2027, with a projected capacity of 342-400 MW.
For the Dhofar Power System:
- Dhofar Wind II IPP: Adjacent to the existing Dhofar Wind I IPP in Shaleem and Al Hallaniyat Islands, this project will add 114-132 MW of capacity and is expected to be operational by Q2 2027.
- Sadah Wind IPP: Located in Sadah, Dhofar Governorate, this project will contribute 81-99 MW and is projected to start operations in Q4 2027.
Strong Response from International Developers
Nama PWP reported strong interest from the global renewable energy sector, with a total of 16 Statements of Qualification submitted for the Jalan Bani Bu Ali Wind IPP and 15 for the remaining four projects. After a rigorous evaluation, 12 companies were shortlisted for each project. These companies include prominent names like ACWA Power, Sembcorp, TotalEnergies, Masdar, Sumitomo, and EDF Renouvelables.
A Major Step Towards Renewable Energy Goals
Ahmed bin Salim al Abri, Acting CEO of Nama PWP, emphasized the importance of these projects for Oman’s renewable energy ambitions. He noted that the wind IPPs are crucial in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing the nation’s clean energy transition.
“These projects demonstrate Oman’s commitment to leveraging its abundant wind resources to meet our national goals for renewable energy generation,” Al Abri said. He added that the high level of interest from both local and international developers reflects strong confidence in Oman’s renewable energy sector and Nama PWP’s transparent procurement process.
Nama PWP has been instrumental in driving Oman’s clean energy agenda, successfully launching multiple solar and wind projects. By enabling private sector participation through competitive tenders, the company is ensuring the development of renewable infrastructure that meets international standards, helping Oman achieve its Vision 2040 targets and its long-term net-zero ambitions by 2050.
These new wind energy projects are expected to significantly contribute to Oman’s economic diversification, while also cementing its role as a leader in the renewable energy sector regionally and internationally.
