“Power Players of the Middle East: CEOs Steering the Region’s Corporate Landscape in 2023”

forbes middle east

CEOs in the Middle East wield extensive powers, overseeing companies that have a profound impact on the Arab world and global markets. This influence is partially attributed to the Gulf Cooperation Council countries investing their sovereign wealth in major local corporations. Managing diverse sectors such as banking, telecommunications, oil, gas, and hospitality, CEOs in the region face multifaceted responsibilities, extending beyond conventional business operations.

In 2023, the most influential CEOs in the Middle East prioritized sustainability, integration, and growth. Notably, Saudi Arabia focused on diversifying its economy, leading to accelerated corporate transformations and the emergence of larger entities through the consolidation of government-owned companies. Additionally, significant initial public offerings (IPOs) and global events, including the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, contributed to increased company profits.

Annual Ranking:

Our third edition of the annual list, “Top CEOs in the Middle East 2023,” features 100 business leaders from 22 different nationalities. Emiratis dominate with 23 CEOs, followed by Egyptians with 19, and Saudis with 18. This reflects a positive trend towards localization, as most major companies are led by local CEOs. The banking sector leads with approximately 17 companies, followed by real estate and construction with 14, and telecommunications with nine.

Diverse Leadership: Among the listed CEOs, there is representation from the head of the world’s largest oil company, a leader in one of the largest liquefied natural gas companies, the head of one of the world’s busiest international airports, and the head of one of the largest international airlines. The collective revenue generated by these CEOs surpassed a trillion dollars in 2022, with the total value of the companies exceeding 5 trillion dollars.

Conclusion: As CEOs in the Middle East navigate the complexities of their roles, they continue to shape the corporate landscape and contribute significantly to the region’s economic growth. The diversity of sectors, commitment to sustainability, and successful integration efforts position these leaders as key players in the global business arena. The annual ranking reflects the dynamic and influential nature of CEOs in the Middle East, showcasing their strategic vision and ability to drive success in a rapidly evolving business environment.
