IFFO launches ‘Arabwood’ to propel Omani cinema on to global stage

Muscat – International Film Foundation of Oman (IFFO) has launched Arabwood, an initiative dedicated to the production of films in Oman and distribution worldwide.

The launch on Sunday marked an effort to promote Omani cinema on the global platform. The event was graced by officials of Oman Film Society, and the embassies of Romania and France in Muscat.

On the occasion, Sudha Sha, director of IFFO, said, “Arabwood’s launch signifies a new era for Omani cinema – one that promises to bring the rich culture and stories of Oman to audiences around the world. Oman’s contribution to world cinema has been negligent. Now is the time for action, to make our mark.”

She added that Arabwood aims to not only produce and distribute movies but also secure funding by seeking support from established industries. The foundation has several exciting plans lined up for 2024 and 2025.

Designed to replicate the success of well-established industries like Hollywood and Bollywood, Arabwood is set to establish global partnerships.

The first collaboration of IFFO will be a partnership with the EU Film Festival organised by the French Embassy in Oman scheduled for September.

This will be followed by the first film project under Arabwood – The Art Factor, an anthology of six movies. Pre-production for this project is set to begin in September, bringing filmmakers from around the country together.

“Life is for art, and it is a great moment for filmmakers to come together for this shared vision,” Sudha said.

The event also featured the screening of a film titled What the Birds Want to Say directed by Sudha Radhika and starring Nilanjana Sha.
