Muscat – His Excellency Sulayem bin Ali bin Sulayem Al-Hakmani, Chairman of the Consumer Protection Authority (CPA), has issued Decision No. 579/2024, which prohibits the circulation of cosmetics and personal care products containing Methyl-N-Methylanthranilate (MNM). The decision specifies that the maximum permissible concentrations of MNM are 0% for sunscreen products, 0.1% for non-rinsable cosmetics and personal care products, and 0.2% for rinsable cosmetics and personal care products.
Violators of this decision will face administrative fines of up to OMR 1000, with fines doubled for repeat offenses. Continuous violations will incur an additional fine of OMR 50 per day, up to a total maximum fine of OMR 2000.
This measure aims to protect consumers from potential health risks associated with MNM, ensuring that cosmetics and personal care products in the market meet stringent safety standards.
Methyl-N-methylanthranilate is a fragrance ingredient used in decorative cosmetics, fine fragrances, shampoos, toilet soaps, and other toiletries. Various toxicological studies have supported the potential for methyl-N- methylanthranilate to exhibit a phototoxic effect.
