On Friday, the media world was shaken by the news of the killing of photojournalist Issam Abdullah, who worked for Reuters, following Israeli airstrikes that targeted towns in southern Lebanon.
Israeli artillery shelling targeted the location where journalists covering events in southern Lebanon were gathered due to the escalating tension caused by the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This resulted in the death of Issam Abdullah and the injury of six other journalists.
Lebanese security sources told Sky News Arabia that “a vehicle carrying journalists from various media outlets was directly hit.”
A Lebanese security source explained that the shelling followed an “infiltration attempt” from the Lebanese side, indicating that preliminary information suggests that a “Palestinian group” attempted to infiltrate without achieving its objective.
Joseph Al-Qossaifi, the head of the Lebanese Journalists Syndicate, stated to Sky News Arabia that “the attack on journalists in Ain al-Shaab is a crime that rises to the level of war crimes.”
He called for “widespread solidarity with all journalists who are dedicated to conveying events.”
The border area in Lebanon has witnessed an escalation since Hamas launched its attack on October 7, with its fighters infiltrating Israeli territory, accompanied by the firing of thousands of rockets towards Israel.
