Sayyid Dhi Yazan bin Haitham Al Said: A Prominent Figure in Oman’s Leadership

BY: MAWARED TEAM

Sayyid Dhi Yazan bin Haitham Al Said, born on August 21, 1990, is the de facto Crown Prince of Oman and an influential political figure in the Sultanate. As the eldest son of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, he holds the office of Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports. This biography explores the life, education, and accomplishments of Sayyid Dhi Yazan, shedding light on his role in shaping Oman’s political landscape and his dedication to promoting youth empowerment and cultural development.

Early Life and Education:
Sayyid Dhi Yazan bin Haitham Al Said was born into the royal family of Oman, with his father, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, serving as the current Sultan. His mother, Sayyida Ahad bint Abdullah bin Hamad Al Busaidiyah, belongs to the esteemed Al Busaidi family. Sayyid Dhi Yazan has one brother and two sisters, and his family lineage connects him to the former Sultan, Qaboos bin Said.

Dhi Yazan pursued his education at Oxford Brookes University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. His academic pursuits reflected his interest in understanding political systems and preparing himself for future leadership responsibilities.

Political Career and Ministerial Roles:
Sayyid Dhi Yazan’s journey in public service began with his appointment as the second secretary at the Omani Embassy in London in 2014. During his five-year tenure, he gained valuable diplomatic experience and contributed to strengthening Oman’s international relations.

In August 2020, Dhi Yazan was entrusted with the significant role of Minister of Culture, Sports, and Youth in his father’s government. This appointment demonstrated Sultan Haitham’s commitment to infusing the government with youthful perspectives and nurturing a capable team to navigate future political challenges. The position held particular importance as it amalgamated the ministries of culture and heritage, areas where Sultan Haitham himself had made significant contributions, and youth affairs, emphasizing Oman’s commitment to empowering its young population.

Crown Prince Appointment and Constitutional Amendments:
On January 11, 2023, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq announced the appointment of Sayyid Dhi Yazan as Oman’s first-ever Crown Prince. This historic decision, made on the first anniversary of Sultan Haitham’s selection as the successor to Sultan Qaboos bin Said, came alongside constitutional amendments establishing a clear mechanism for succession.

As per the new Fundamental Law, the Crown Prince position will pass to the eldest son of the Sultan, ensuring a stable line of succession. Sayyid Dhi Yazan’s appointment exemplifies Sultan Haitham’s vision of expanding participation in decision-making and preparing the next generation of leaders to guide Oman’s future.

Vision for Oman’s Future:
Sayyid Dhi Yazan’s appointment as Crown Prince signifies his role as a key figure in shaping Oman’s future. With a foundation in political science and hands-on experience in diplomacy and governance, he brings a fresh perspective and youthful energy to his responsibilities.

Furthermore, the newly published Basic Law highlights the importance of the Crown Prince’s position and outlines the succession process, ensuring stability and continuity in Oman’s leadership. This transparent and inclusive approach reflects Sultan Haitham’s commitment to ensuring the country’s progress and the welfare of its citizens.

Conclusion:
Sayyid Dhi Yazan bin Haitham Al Said’s journey from his educational pursuits to his appointment as Crown Prince of Oman demonstrates his dedication to public service and his commitment to fostering cultural development and empowering the youth. As he prepares to assume the mantle of leadership, his presence promises to bring a dynamic and forward-thinking approach to governance, guided by the principles of Oman’s rich heritage and the aspirations of its people.
