(ONA) — Represented by the Environment Authority, the Sultanate of Oman took part in meetings in Geneva today to discuss a mechanism for enhancing the implementation of the Basel Convention.
The meetings discussed issues related to compliance with the Basel Convention, the draft programme of work for the period 2026-2027 and preparation for the “Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention”. The discussion panels are envisaged to elaborate on the international pact at regional centres and other organizations, with the prime aim of promoting commitment, building human capacities, submitting national reports and developing legal frameworks for the implementation of the Basel Convention.
The meetings also discussed means of enhancing cooperation among member states and reviewing integration of international environment agreements like the “Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants”, the “Rotterdam Convention on International Trade in Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides”, the “Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal”.
Oman is keen on enacting national laws for regulating waste management in a manner that keeps pace with international developments.
