The Sultanate of Oman: Competitive Capabilities and Promising Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen Projects

In its continuous efforts in the field of renewable energy and green hydrogen, the Sultanate of Oman recently signed two new agreements with investments totaling $10 billion. These agreements were made with the “Posco-Engie Alliance” and the “Hyport Duqm Alliance” to develop two new projects for green hydrogen production. With these agreements, the total number of signed projects reaches five, with investments exceeding $30 billion and an expected production of 750,000 metric tons of green hydrogen. These projects were part of the first round of bidding presented by the Oman Hydrogen Company “Hydrogen Oman” in November of last year. Furthermore, the announcement was made regarding the launch of the second bidding round for the Green Hydrogen Concession Areas, which includes a new set of concession areas that will be offered to companies interested in investing in Oman’s growing hydrogen sector. A joint report by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and the International Energy Agency confirms that Oman is on its way to becoming one of the world’s largest hydrogen exporters by 2030

Mawared team’s analysis of this important news is as follows:

The recent investments in renewable energy and green hydrogen projects in the Sultanate of Oman have significant potential to positively impact the employment sector and address the issue of unemployment. Here’s a comprehensive analysis of how these projects can serve the employment sector:

Direct Job Creation: The development and operation of green hydrogen projects require a skilled workforce across various areas such as engineering, construction, project management, operations, maintenance, and research and development. These projects will create a considerable number of direct employment opportunities for Omani nationals.

Indirect Job Creation: The establishment of green hydrogen projects leads to a ripple effect on the economy, generating indirect job opportunities in sectors such as manufacturing, supply chain management, logistics, and services. This includes the need for equipment suppliers, transportation providers, maintenance service providers, and other supporting industries.

Skill Development and Training: With the introduction of advanced technologies and processes in the renewable energy sector, there will be a demand for specialized skills. To meet this demand, the government and private sector can invest in training programs, vocational courses, and educational initiatives to upskill and reskill the local workforce. This helps in creating a pool of qualified professionals who can contribute effectively to the green hydrogen industry.

Diversification of Economy: The investments in green hydrogen projects contribute to the diversification of Oman’s economy, which has traditionally relied on oil and gas. By expanding into renewable energy, the country can reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and create new avenues for economic growth. This diversification stimulates job creation across multiple sectors, fostering a more resilient and sustainable economy.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs): The development of green hydrogen projects offers opportunities for local SMEs to participate in the supply chain. SMEs can provide goods and services such as construction materials, equipment rentals, transportation, and other support services. This promotes the growth and development of local businesses, leading to increased employment opportunities.

Sustainable Development: The investments in renewable energy and green hydrogen align with global sustainability goals. Oman’s commitment to green initiatives can attract foreign investments, technology transfers, and knowledge sharing. This collaboration brings expertise and resources, stimulating job creation in both the renewable energy sector and associated industries.

Overall, the investments in renewable energy and green hydrogen projects in Oman have the potential to drive economic growth, diversify the economy, and create a significant number of direct and indirect employment opportunities. These initiatives are vital steps towards addressing the problem of unemployment and promoting sustainable development in the Sultanate of Oman.
